Art.sy founder Carter Cleveland and artist Tom Sachs join SXSW lineup

Carter Cleveland, CEO and founder of the online arts sales and info site Artsy, and artist Tom Sachs will join up for a featured panel at SXSW Interactive on March 15, festival officials announced today.

In January, Tom Sachs signed his name and show title under the sign for the Contemporary Austin.

Cleveland started Artsy — which now has $9.5 billion dollars of inventory — while still a student at Princeton.

The New York-based Sachs is currently celebrated with “Tom Sachs: Boombox Retrospective, 1999-2015,” which opened in January at the Contemporary Austin.

Marshalling outdated technological gadgets (cassette tapes, turntables, analog dials), over the course of his career Sachs has fashioned dozens of working boomboxes, many of which fill the Contemporary’s downtown Jones Center.

Several of his large-scale sculptures are now at the Contemporary’s Laguna Gloria location. “Boombox Retrospective” continues through April 19.

For their SXSW talk, entitled Is Good Business the Best Art?, Cleveland and Sachs are scheduled to discuss “how to achieve business success without selling your soul”  and “how the Internet effects the future of the art biz.”

But wait — there’s much more to Austin’s current Sachs-apolooza.

March 12 is the opening of Sachs’ solo “Nuggets” at Lora Reynolds Gallery.

On March 15 — following the SXSW panel– Sachs will sign the zine he’s produced in conjunction with “Boombox Retrospective,” which is available for purchase at the Contemporary. SSS+Boombox+Art+5

On March 16 Sachs’ film “A Space Program” — which is about himself and his creative process for his sprawling “Space Program 2.0: MARS” at New York’s Park Avenue Armory in 2012 — premieres as part of the SXSW Film Fest.

And then for three days, March 18-20, there’s a “Boombox Retrospective” SXSW event with a lineup of hip hop DJs — invited by Sachs — using the artist’s boomboxes for afternoon showcases.

SXSW badge and wristband holders receive priority and free access to the DJ showcases. Space provided, general admission is $5.
