A pioneer creative enterprise on South Congress Avenue — long before Austin even had the so-called SoCo district — Yard Dog Art Gallery opened in 1995, at first showing folk and outsider art from the American South.
Soon, however, Yard Dog ceased to define itself with the problematic moniker of “folk and outsider art” and began representing artists of varied backgrounds who share a kind of new Americana style as well many artists who have a connection to music.
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Yard Dog hosts a double-header this weekend with Jon Langford and Steve Wynn.
Welsh-born, Chicago-based Langford — former drummer of seminal punk band the Mekons — is best known for his striking portraits of music icons including Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Los Angeles-based Wynn, a longtime player in underground bands, makes his artistic debut.
