Salvage Vanguard Theater in East Austin loses lease

After 10 years Salvage Vanguard Theater will have to vacate its location, a 6,000-square-foot converted warehouse on Manor Road, artistic director Jenny Larson announced today.Exterior2_Salvage-Vangard-Photo-Credit_2014

The theater company’s lease expires June 30, 2016, and Larson said a new landlord has not offered them the opportunity to renew.

The indie theater group moved into the Manor Road building in 2006, carving out a 99-seat theater and a 49-seat theater along with scene shop, storage, office space and workshop space.

In addition to staging its own production, SVT has been home to dozens of arts productions and served as regular performance venue for Trouble Puppet Theater Company and KDH Dance Company, among other Austin arts groups.

KDH Dance artistic director Kathy Dunn Hamrick said: “SVT has become a home for our dance company and for our audiences. SVT is the only theater in Austin that is affordable, suitable for my work and available during our season. I can honestly say that without SVT, I don’t know where I would be able to present our dance season.”

Larson said the new owner of the property is Fairway Properties. Calls to Fairway were not immediately returned.

Larson said that SVT has no definite plans for any relocation at this time.
