Austin Opera loses top exec to Arizona Opera

Joe Specter, general director of Austin Opera, is leaving his post, the organization announced today.

Specter has accepted the position of president and general drector with Arizona Opera in Phoenix.

Specter came to Austin in 2012 from the Metropolitan Opera, where he has served as director of institutional relations. A former professional baritone, Specter earned an artist diploma from Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts.

Specter’s resignation is effective June 30.

Wendi Kushner, Austin Opera board chair, said Specter has represented the company well within the community. “Joe Specter has been a great spokesperson for the art form and a trusted colleague,” Kushner said. “I can speak for everyone in the arts community in saying that we’ve had a lot of fun, and we will all miss Joe and his family. We wish them the best.”

Austin Opera is currently in a production of “The Barber of Seville” through May 1.
