Sneak peek: The Contemporary Austin’s Jones Center under construction

The Contemporary Austin’s downtown Jones Center gallery building currently is undergoing a $3 million upgrade.

The improvement project includes adding a dramatic canopy roof to the museum’s outdoor roofdeck/program area, expand the interior gallery space and add important upgrades to the building’s climate controls system’s to meet museum industry specifications.

The renovations address areas of concern that have emerged as the museum’s scope and activity level have greatly expanded in the last several years.

While the building will re-open in late November, we stopped by today for a hard-hat tour.

The canopy extends the entire rooftop of the Jones Center which is at Congress Ave. and Seventh St.

Offices were moved from the first to the second floor so that the first floor could be significantly opened up for more gallery space.

Not exciting looking, but oh so very important. The humidity control system will allow the museum to borrow and exhibit more delicate works of art.
