More leadership moves at Austin Opera

Days before Austin Opera begins its new season, company officials announced another change-up to its administrative leadership.

In a Sept. 8 letter to Austin Opera board members, president Jon Nash announced that Jane Weaver-Sobel, who had been serving as Interim General Director, would not be continuing in the role.

Weaver-Sobel had been brought on just two months ago, stepping in on an interim basis after Joseph Specter resigned in June to take a job at Arizona Opera.

Specter had been general director of AO for four years.

Weaver-Sobel’s contract with AO had “run its course,” the letter states, and opera board member Connee B. Sullivan would be stepping in as interim general director.

Board chairman Elisabeth Juen Waltz said that the search for a permanent managing director was underway and in the interview stage. Waltz said Sullivan would return to her board position once a hire was made.

Austin Opera begins its season Saturday with a one-night concert version of Kevin Puts’ “The Manchurian Candidate.”
